Overview

About this course.

This one-day course is for engineers already comfortable with Claude Code's basics. Each topic gets a short concept lecture followed immediately by a longer, guided hands-on lab. The throughline is moving from one-off prompting toward durable project context: rules that persist, reusable skills and commands, subagents for isolated work, and test-first workflows that scale to a real codebase.

Objectives

What you'll learn

  • Construct scoped CLAUDE.md guidance for backend and frontend directories
  • Build and invoke a custom slash command and a packaged Skill
  • Use Plan Mode and a test-first workflow to refactor legacy code safely
  • Create a project-scoped subagent and delegate a noisy sub-task to it
  • Explain the security posture required before connecting an MCP server

Audience

Who it's for

  • Software Engineers (suggested)
  • DevOps Engineers (suggested)
  • QA/Test Engineers (suggested)

Prerequisites

Before you start

  • Completion of the beginner course, or equivalent hands-on experience with Claude Code's core workflow
  • Comfort reviewing multi-file diffs and running a local test suite unassisted
  • Familiarity with collaborative engineering workflows and basic testing concepts (unit and integration tests)

1. Context Hierarchy – CLAUDE.md, Rules, and AGENTS.md

  • The context hierarchy: root CLAUDE.md, nested folder-level files, AGENTS.md, and user-level settings
  • What belongs in CLAUDE.md versus what belongs in a skill, a hook, or a permission rule
  • Using nested CLAUDE.md files so different modules can carry different conventions
  • Hands-on exercise: Write nested CLAUDE.md files for a backend module and a frontend module
  • Hands-on exercise: Introduce a conflicting instruction between two CLAUDE.md files and resolve it

2. Custom Slash Commands and Reusable Skills

  • Slash commands as reusable prompt templates
  • Skills as packaged domain logic, loaded only when relevant
  • Hands-on exercise: Create a slash command that runs the test suite and summarizes failures
  • Hands-on exercise: Create a security-review skill that checks for common vulnerability patterns
  • Hands-on exercise: Use current framework documentation to generate a feature that matches an existing contract

3. Legacy Code, AI-Assisted TDD, and Plan Mode

  • Reading undocumented legacy code in a read-only mode before touching anything
  • Hands-on exercise: Analyze a simulated legacy function and explain its behavior without modifying it
  • Hands-on exercise: Generate a test suite that locks in current behavior before refactoring
  • Using Plan Mode to propose a refactor approach for review before any files change
  • Hands-on exercise: Refactor in small steps, running tests after each change

4. Subagents for Parallel and Isolated Work

  • Subagents versus Skills: isolated context window versus inline in the main thread
  • When isolation is worth it: large outputs, exploratory research, noisy intermediate steps
  • Hands-on exercise: Create a subagent that runs the full test suite and returns only the failures
  • Hands-on exercise: Delegate a code-review pass to a read-only subagent

5. Introduction to MCP

  • What MCP servers are and why they require the same scrutiny as any other dependency
  • Why credentials belong in environment variables, never hardcoded into configuration
  • Preview of advanced-day topics: installing, authenticating, and reviewing MCP tool permissions
